Ingredients
- 2 lbs of beef
- Classic Marinade (for ~2 lbs of beef):
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 2½ tbsp sugar (or 2 tbsp honey)
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 2 tbsp minced garlic
- 2 tbsp finely chopped green onions
- 1 tbsp grated Asian pear (or apple) — helps tenderize and sweeten
- 1 tbsp mirin (optional, for gloss and depth)
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
Directions
- Preparation:
- • Marinate for at least 1–2 hours, or overnight for maximum flavor.
- • Stir-fry in a hot pan or grill quickly in small batches to avoid steaming.
- • Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped scallions before serving.
- Serving Tip:
- Serve sizzling in a shallow platter or small cast-iron pan.
- Add a small bowl of steamed rice or lettuce wraps nearby.
- This is typically one of the most popular dishes — make sure it’s near the center of your buffet.
Notes
- NOTE: Tokyo Central has a Bulgogi Sauce that is easy to use here instead

This is such an easy and delicious recipe! We love P.F. Chang’s Mongolian Beef. This recipe emulates it very well - first tried in April 2021. Use Flank Steak, Flap Meat, or Skirt Steak. This holds in the oven well so you can make it early and keep it warm.
